What do you believe?

An important organization culture-fit interview question that I often ask candidates is, "Can you state in simple words what you you believe as a professional in this role?" Loaded question, right?

Examples

"I believe in being an innovator." - Walt Disney

To "prime the pot," I may often to a share a few of my own.

  • I believe in service and serving others.
  • I believe in lifting and coaching others.
  • I believe in leading by example.
  • I believe in community and loving our neighbors.

It's a simple yet endlessly complex reflective question. It pulls at core values that are difficult to bring forth with traditional questions. Additionally, it requires candidates to demonstrate clear communication by tactfully presenting thoughts.

How do your respond?

What do you believe? Respond to this brief with you own "I believe..." statements.

"I believe that unarmed truth and unconditional love will have the final word in reality. This is why right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than evil triumphant." - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Hiring managers, what interesting reflection questions do you ask candidates?
