what do you actually want

what do you actually want

I shared this question on LinkedIn last evening, but it’s been sitting in my mind since it was asked to me.

I shared in a recent Periodical that I recently hired a coach; yesterday was our first session and as we were talking through some things he asked me, “what do you actually want?”

I blurted out an answer…

“I want to do whatever I want, when I want, how I want. (WWH)”

I realize that sounds like an answer a spoiled kid would have, and maybe I am a little spoiled, but what I really meant by that is I want to be able to do the things I want to do, which sometimes can change and change quickly, so long as I don’t negatively impact other people–like my family and clients.

If I want to start learning how to make music, I want the freedom and financial ability to do so, which I have finally done after years of saying “If I could be anything else in the world, I’d produce music.” I’m able to practice making beats in my free time and it doesn’t negatively impact my family or my clients.

I’ve done what I wanted, when I wanted, and how I wanted.

If I want to stop doing traditional financial planning for NEW clients and focus on helping people find and live their authentic lives through LifeDesign+, I want to be able to shift my future business model. I did this about a year ago. I still work with my clients as we always have, but I’ve changed the relationships on the RLS Wealth websit e for potential clients to only LifeDesign+. I’ve referred traditional financial planning prospects to other advisors.

I’ve done what I wanted, when I wanted, and how I wanted.

I know that I need to feel as if I have the freedom to explore, experiment, drift, try new things, pivot, and evolve my focus as I feel called to do. And that boils down to being able to do what I want, when I want, and how I want.

The tough thing is that’s not concrete. It’s vague. And only I am able to know what that really is and sometimes I only know what that is when it shows up.

But, I at least know what I want and can use that as my North Star, or my “hell yes or it’s a no” test. I can also use it as the baseline and determine if something impedes on some of my ability to do what I want, when I want, and how I want too much or just a little and allows me to feel free.

I might get more clear on what it is that I actually want as I continue to work with a coach and I do have more details that I’ll keep to my Self, but for now, the reminder of WWH was very powerful for me yesterday.

Do you know what YOU actually want?

Depending on your answer to this, LifeDesign+ might be just what you need to either find your answer or begin to explore how to move closer to your answer today. I would love to see if the process and me as your guide would be a good fit for helping you move closer to your authentic life---just hit reply and we can set up a time to chat.

See you tomorrow and keep pursuing,

JC

Justin I think this vagueness you write about is why it’s so hard for clients to express what they want when financial planners and others ask “what are your goals?” I’ve been experimenting with different approaches and think more of us need to understand it’s not so concrete. Thanks for the thoughtful post.
