What NOT to Do at Work When You Have a Chronic Illness

Being a Chronic illness warrior, I understand the struggle of finding it hard to get by at work, but don’t worry– I’ve got you. Here’s a helpful list of what to avoid while managing work life with a chronic illness:

1. Let’s Say No to “Overcommitting”

You are awesome, but everyone has their limits. Avoid overcommitting to project or tasks, especially during tough times. Remember, that it is okay to prioritize yourself.

2. Ignoring Symptoms

Listen to your body, because it knows you the best. Do not push through fatigue and pain, it will only make your symptoms worse. Make sure to seek medical attention when needed, your health comes first.

3. Accommodations Are Your Superpowers

Do not ignore accommodations at your work place because they are like your personal cheerleaders, designed to support your health and help you succeed.

4. Balance is Everything

We all want to work hard, but don’t forget to rest hard. Finding the perfect balance between your job and personal life is important. Always take out time for hobbies that bring you joy outside of your work.

5. Comparing Yourself to Others

This is your journey. Comparing yourself to others who don’t have to face the same difficulties as you every day will only make you frustrated and depressed. Celebrate your own accomplishments and growth.

6. Keeping Your Condition a Secret

It’s okay to keep your health condition private but keeping it a secret might make it harder for you to get the support and accommodations at work. If you are comfortable, consider sharing with your HR and manager. They are there to help.

7. Self-Care is Key

Make self-care your top-priority. To be the best version of you, make sure to get enough rest, exercise, eat well and manage stress to keep yourself feeling your best.

8. Being Too Hard on Yourself

Remember to treat yourself with kindness. Managing work and chronic illness is challenging and can sometimes lead to distress. Always ask for help and support when needed.

Chronic illness comes with its own challenges, but you should always remember that your health comes first. It is okay to take it one day at a time and with a little kindness, self- care and support, you will be able to fight your way through.
