What to Do When You Know You Have a Problem with Addiction
When you know you have a problem with addiction, what should you do?
The easy answer is — get help. But the decision is not always that easy. People have pride, even when they’re in such a low state.
Admitting You Have a Problem Is One of the First Steps
Often, even though you know you have a problem with addiction, admitting it is more difficult. But that’s okay, admitting the problem exists is one of the first steps. Admitting the problem is a necessary step before you move on to the next one — seeking help. A problem with addiction is one of the worst problems a person can have, and it takes a lot of courage to face it. Don’t be afraid. One of the most important steps is to realize that you’re not alone.
What’s the Next Step
According to the NIH (National Institute of Drug Abuse Division)
The first step in treatment is “detox,” which helps clients to remove all of the drugs from their system. This is important, because drugs impair the mental abilities you need to stay in treatment. When clients first stop abusing drugs, they can experience a variety of physical and emotional withdrawal symptoms, including depression, anxiety, and other mood disorders; restlessness; and sleeplessness. Treatment centers are very experienced in helping you get through this process and keeping you safe. Depending on what drug you are addicted to, there may also be medications that will make you feel a little better during drug withdrawal, which makes it easier to stop using.
At Into Action Recovery Centers, we’ve been through it. We understand what you’re going through. That’s one of the reasons why we make it as easy as possible while ensuring we develop a targeted plan of treatment that will work for you. Just because you have a problem with addiction, doesn’t mean your life is over. It may be just beginning.
