What to do when you don’t know what to do with your career?

You might be surprised with this information – or maybe not – but a significant part of the professionals who approach me have two things in common:
1 - They are unsatisfied with their careers.
2 - They want to change it, but they are feeling “a bit lost about it”.
You don’t look for a career coach if you are 100% satisfied with your job and career.?
You probably don’t search for professional career help before you have tried different things on your own, like watching YouTube videos, changing your resume or applying for several different jobs.
You might have clarity that your current work situation is not fulfilling or sustainable anymore, but you still have no idea about what the next step looks like.
The good news is: you are not the only one feeling like that, and also, this situation can be changed. Getting clarity about your career doesn’t happen “by magic”.
Instead, when you allow yourself to dedicate time to it, follow a methodology that has already worked for others, have some “external eyes” (the ones from a professional) guiding you in the process and you make it a priority, the transformation is real.
Research shows most people will change careers at least once in their lives.?
In fact, the average person tends to go through 3-7 careers before they retire, and this number may be more like 5-7 for the current and upcoming generations of workers.
There is no “perfect age” to change careers. I have heard people in their late 20s feeling that they were “too late” to change jobs, and I had clients over 50 who also felt the same way. So how to identify the right moment to do it?
5 clear signs that it’s time for a career change:
1 - You’re apathetic, disconnected and anxious about meeting your boss and dissatisfied with your current role.
2 - You don’t feel like you’re making an impact – this is not a priority to everyone, but for those who do have it as a priority, they will strongly feel like “dying inside” and empty day after day when they remain in their current job.
3 - Your job is affecting your personal life – the separation between work and personal life is only effective in theory. You feel chronically exhausted, losing sleep, suffering from headaches, or experiencing other physical symptoms. Work is turning you into an unhappy or bitter person.
4 - Even your salary can’t make up for your dissatisfaction – money can’t fix everything (at least, not forever). Even if the pay is good, it’s not enough to keep you engaged at work. Every Tuesday, you are already dreaming about the weekend. The financial stability can be present, but you feel you are wasting your time.
5 - You know there is more for you out there – you find yourself browsing job boards instead of work emails. You feel jealous of your friends’ careers, wondering how they landed such “perfect” jobs. You feel ashamed when people ask you about your job because you wish it were something different.?
Are you feeling like that? If yes, it’s probably time to seriously consider a career change.
One thing that stops people from a career change is the fear that “it won’t look good in their resumes” – especially if they change jobs “too fast” (in less than 2 years). I know that some recruiters might consider you a job hopper (in other words, someone who changes jobs very often), but remaining in a toxic work environment, in a place that doesn’t allow your growth anymore, or in which you’re underpaid just to look good on paper is probably a terrible decision to make. No job is worth your mental health.?
The career change situation can be much more complex than that, especially when you have financial commitments or when you are the main (or the only) provider for your family. On the other hand, it can be challenging also when, from the outside, everyone says that you have “an amazing job and work for a great company”, and that they would do anything to be in your situation – but the only thing you want is to run away immediately from that job.

There is no right or wrong when it comes to career changes. It’s not easy to deal with a competitive and unstable job market as the one we are facing now. But it’s also not easy to pivot and figure out what to do next at your age.
You choose your hard. You decide between two difficult options, and you choose in which direction to make an effort.
