What to do when you can't answer a question

Do you feel insecure about the possibility of not being able to answer a question about your presentation topic?
That’s understandable. But by working on your mindset and employing a novel technique, you can overcome your insecurity.
Firstly, realise that not being able to answer a question is no big deal. We live in a world where the sheer amount of information means we can’t possibly know everything. Dealing with questions where we’re unsure about the answer is as much about HOW we respond. It’s important to maintain our composure.
Secondly, do you have to answer the question at all?
Depending on the type of question it is and the context, you can deflect the question. You can redirect it out for someone else to give an answer or give their perspective.
So, you could say something like, “that’s a very pertinent/relevant/interesting/curious question. What does anyone else think? Pedro, what’s your take on this?”
At the same time, try to come from a place of curiosity rather than a place of insecurity because you don’t have an ideal answer at that moment.
This technique not only gives you time to think, it also gives you the chance to piggyback your own answer on the other person’s answer.
Another advantage is that it promotes interaction within the group.
Again, being able to use this technique does depend on the context of your talk and is better suited for questions about perspectives rather than facts or data. But it IS a very useful strategy that you can employ from time to time and come across as being professional and in control.
