What To Do When Rusty Water Appears

What To Do When Rusty Water Appears

Rusty water can be caused by a number of things; rusty pipes, damage to your pipes from construction, sediment in your water, a rusty water heater, a break in your water main or a problem with the water source be it municipal or private well.

Where is it coming from?

To find the source, your first step is to do a small test. Run the cold water for a minute and then stop and rerun it. Do the same with the hot water. If the rust is only in the hot water, it’s likely caused by your water heater. If it’s just in the cold water, then it’s probably coming from your pipes. It could also be the municipal pipes, especially if you live in an older part of town, in which case the municipality will have to deal with the cost.

What can you do?

Addressing this fix often means replacement, unfortunately. If it’s your hot water heater, once rust starts, pointing to the tank’s integrity being compromised, usually replacement is the most cost-effective solution. If it is only certain faucets, then it definitely is inside your home and a particular pipe may be the culprit.

Call in a professional

This is one area where there is not much you can do yourself to fix or repair. Unless the water supply has high levels of minerals or sediment causing the problem, a pro will be needed to investigate and determine your options. Filtration might be needed or as already outlined replacing sections or tanks along the way. A licensed plumber can also help verify the source is on the city side, with a report indicating the tests and findings.
