What to do when encountering a bug on an RSI platform

Bugs are a fact of life (on RSI* platforms and other software). Interpreters will run into them occasionally. As such, we have everything to gain by learning basic troubleshooting methods.
Encountering a bug?
Here are some steps to follow (in order) as your first line of defense when experiencing a bug/issue on any RSI platform, during an event:
- refresh the page
- log out and log back in
- make sure you have authorized Chrome/the platform to access your mic (icon in the address bar)
- close and relaunch Chrome, log back in
- place the RSI platform tab by itself (no other tabs in the same window)
this can also help when the platform is slow to respond; ex. if it takes longer than one second for a mic to turn on after clicking
- pause/check your antivirus/firewall (see comment section below)
As you troubleshoot, if the issue persists or worsens, just move on to the next step.
???? Applying these steps fix over 75% of issues. (Yes, really.)
?? If the bug/issue persists after applying all the steps above
- pass the mic to your boothmate, as required
- flag the issue to tech support
with full description: what, when, degree of severity
- list all the steps you have tried to solve it.
What can we do upstream (before an event) to minimize the risk of bugs showing up?
Before the event:
- run software / browser / Operating System (OS) updates
- reboot your computer
- make sure you are using Chrome as your browser (Firefox may work also; refer to platform-specific instructions)
- use an incognito browser window
- close apps, software and windows that are not needed
- plug the mic & headphones/headset in your computer before logging into the platform
The web page/platform may not recognize that you plugged the mic in, in which case it will continue running the integrated mic.
Tip
???? Have a list of debugging steps at the ready when performing RSI. This way, when trouble comes, you can go through the steps without thinking and adding to your stress.

4 年I have another one to add Amélie. I got a distorted speaker’s feed during an event on the Interprefy platform, and after unsuccessful troubleshooting, I noticed my antivirus was “pausing” the feed, which resulted in distortion. I use McAfee antivirus software. When I clicked the Antivirus prompt and disabled the option, it all turned back to normal. This is related to the “App boost” option in the antivirus program, where you enable boosting or speeding up applications. ;)

4 年This is GREAT advice!! It's true that RSI platforms often have various issues that don't seem to do with one's settings: i.e. today in class, I had an issue where I was active, broadcast, and un-muted, and no one could hear me. But by following your very clear steps, I was able to resolve it! Great post!

4 年Very good suggestions, Amélie. I like that you listed all the options in order. It’s helpful to remember that there are several actions one can take, and adopt a methodical approach to it, as you suggest ??????
