In leadership, one of the biggest challenges is building a cohesive team when it often feels like we’re all standing on opposite peaks, separated by our differences.
It's natural for teams to focus on what sets them apart—different skills, approaches, backgrounds, or even working styles. We tend to see "us" and "them", whether it's different departments, roles, or even individuals. These differences can seem significant and, at times, overwhelming. ??
But here's the thing: we often focus so much on the visible differences that we miss what lies beneath. Beneath the surface, there’s a much bigger foundation that connects us all—common goals, shared values, and the drive to succeed together. ????
When we take a closer look, we realize that the real strength of a team isn’t just in our individual differences. It’s in our shared purpose, our commitment to the same mission, and the desire to make an impact. These are the things that bind us together, even if they aren’t immediately obvious. ??
Moving Beyond "Us vs. Them"
As a leader, it’s critical to help your team move beyond the mindset of "us" versus "them". The real magic happens when the team starts to think of themselves simply as "us."

What I Do as a Leader
One of the most impactful things I do as a leader is to actively create spaces for open dialogue. ??
I ask for input from every voice on the team—not just the loudest ones. By doing this, I uncover insights we might otherwise miss, and more importantly, I help my team see the values and ideas they share. These conversations have led to stronger collaboration and a better sense of ownership across the team. ?
When we uncover the things we have in common, we break down the walls between “us” and “them”. That’s when we start building a team that truly works as one. ??
