What do we need to change to get more creators and communities onto web3?

We’re on the cusp of a new era for Web3, but we need to change the way we think about it first. Rather than trying to get more creators/ communities onto web3, the focus should be on increasing our collective knowledge.?

Web3 is creating fair systems that do not rely on centralized platforms, which have come to rule users’ lives. They will no longer maintain their positions of power, knowing that they are less inclined to support creators.

The very existence of algorithms and their changes limit the success of creators. Facebook will always try and keep its user base within its own platform by limiting access to content unless it has been published through Facebook. Even by publishing on an external site like WordPress with easy sharing options, the audience may not be reached because they don't use Facebook due to concerns about privacy or data ownership.

We need to explain what decentralization is, the difference between web2 and web3, and why it's better than the status quo. Currently, tokenization is so complicated for end users that it can be off-putting. Take creator or platform tokens, to make any transactions on web3 users need to have crypto to buy tokens, and a wallet to hold their crypto. They need to be informed of all the security barriers like seed phrases and private keys.

What about privacy? 78% of a surveyed group of people believe that social media platforms hold way too much power, and the same group felt powerless in guarding their data. While this may seem contradictory you can see why some would want control over where their data goes and how it is used by opting out from these platforms completely.

Web3 helps enforce the privacy and integrity of user data because it is built on the blockchain, requiring users to have private keys if they want to own data. Furthermore, the data in the blockchain is also immutable.

The tables could still turn for web3. Many platforms/communities are token gated meaning that holders of NFTs/tokens are allowed access. Mimicking the single sign-on process we have seen in web2. This is a much more secure method of entry, limiting the data shared – ideal for the new digital landscape but web2 natives need to understand this.

Furthermore, to harness the growth that is needed we need to collaborate on building products that are better for everyone. This way new types of products and platforms can be created together. This can be possible through DAOs with the purpose to build and furthering each other together.

For creators, web3 might provide plenty of opportunities but for fans who adore their favorite creators, does web3 offer them enough value to transition??

Let’s look at the facts: We have a generation of people who have grown up fostering relationships with friends, family, acquaintances, and love interests using social media platforms. Can you imagine cutting off all those relationships for something that may or may not work out in the long run? For them to make a shift from what is familiar would need some pretty compelling reasons beyond being able to interact with their favorite creator on another platform!

To onboard more creators we need to come up with better, more encouraging narratives for users to experiment and take risks on new platforms. The first step is to emphasize that taking the leap into Web3 will not leave you behind. You can still use Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok while using MELON and other web3 platforms. This is a new way to interact with friends, share NFTs, and connect online in a safer more decentralized manner.

It's important that these services aren't seen as replacements for current centralized services. They're additions or "extras" that enhance without compromising your privacy or security in any way. This can only happen if users are educated about the benefits of decentralization.

This is a powerful message for creators who have been left behind by the traditional system. In an industry that has been dominated by record labels and publishers, we are now able to take control of our own destinies. But, it’s important that we don’t lose sight of what got us here in the first place: collective learning, experimentation, and expansion. It will need hard work but it is worth it!

This is a period of rapid change and everyone needs to be patient and prepared to fail while trying new things. The next few years will be critical in determining technological success. Enabling and empowering creators, or it could remain an interesting experiment.

As we’ve seen, web3 is a work in progress. It needs to provide a wider vision of a level playing field. This is where MELON comes in, with social content collectibles fans can join the web3 space whilst feeling like they are still a part of web2. They have the opportunity to be empowered by their favorite creators, owning a part of their favorite social posts, which comes with tailored benefits. MELON is the gateway between web2 and web3.
