What Do Trevor Noah and Five States Have in Common? STARs
Whether in a fireside chat with Trevor Noah or a network for state-level action (more on that below…), people are resonating with the message behind the Tear the Paper Ceiling movement: it’s time to open up opportunities for STARs, the 70+ million Americans Skilled Through Alternative Routes, rather than a bachelor’s degree.?
A few weeks ago at Human Potential Summit , I was asked to share “how to transform awareness into action.” When it comes to the Tear the Paper Ceiling movement, I often get asked - what's the best way to get started? My answer: the best way to get started is the way you're able to get started today.
I’m happy to say that action is taking place every single day thanks to the hard work of Tear the Paper Ceiling coalition partners and most importantly - STARs themselves. I hope these latest updates inspire you on how to start building an economy that works for STARs today, whether you’re an employer, a community, or simply someone who is ready to spread the word:
Our inspiration for this movement is singular, but the actions and solutions needed are diverse and many. No one organization can do it alone. This is a movement for anyone who cares about STARs - and STARs are increasingly leading the movement.
As Chief People and Sustainability Officer (and STAR) LaFawn Davis shared on Indeed's main stage, “STARs represent a massive talent pool - roughly half of the U.S. workforce…even though I had the skills and expertise I was turned down because I didn’t have a college degree. That is why our mission is so personal to me.”
And as CEO of Cengage Michael Hansen shared in FORTUNE, “The progress made so far in tearing the paper ceiling is promising...67% of employers are expanding their hiring search to include candidates with industry certifications and credentials. But the work is far from over…The path forward requires a concerted effort across the labor ecosystem to evolve the outdated mindsets that have perpetuated this oversight for far too long.”
The paper ceiling took years to take hold - it will take years dismantle and replace it - together, on purpose. The good news is we all can start by asking “what action can I take today?”?

1 周I believe Robert Fulghum got it right, published in 1986, and I believe that #opportunity@work is working hard to reveal the value of those simple truths - teach someone how to fish, teach someone how to farm or garden, teach someone how to repair…make an lasting impact on one’s life, change their world and the trajectory of life. “I believe that imagination is stronger than knowledge. That myth is more potent than history. That dreams are more powerful than facts. That hope always triumphs over experience. That laughter is the only cure for grief. And I believe that love is stronger than death.” Robert Fulghum - All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten

3 周I attended the Indeed FutureWorks conference virtually, and it was truly inspiring! Hearing LaFawn Davis and Trevor Noah discuss their journey as STARs was empowering. As someone passionate about skill-based hiring, it’s incredible to see the energy and commitment reshaping the way we think about talent, making it clear that skills, not just degrees, are more accurate measures of potential. Glad to see commitment from state governments and some of the largest employers.
