What do snakes and the moon have got to do with your perception?

Have you ever seen a snake dance to the tune of the snake charmer? Or perhaps witnessed a full moon? Now you may wonder what is the connection between the two!

Last Sunday my family convinced me to skip my afternoon siesta and accompany them to the Nehru Science Centre. As I drove there unsure about how I became the influenced rather than the influencer, I did not expect to be amazed by some facts.

The staff there who were interacting with the kids and parents told us that the snake does not dance to the tune of the snake charmer but is actually protecting itself and hence moving. You may already know the snake does not hear but senses the vibration. So much for all the Naagin movies we saw as kids (atleast 6 if you do a quick internet search). Another fact that they mentioned was that while we call it a full moon day we don't actually witness a full moon. We can see only upto 59% of the moon.

By evening I was wondering about how much I know about what I don't know. Now I do admit I was not too fascinated by science even in school. The realisation though that there is so much more to learn and what I see may not be reality was insightful.

And that's the thought I want to leave you with this weekend. Rethink about what you perceive as reality. Both in your personal and professional lives. Maybe that nagging colleague or relative is actually protecting themselves from you. Or maybe you have not seen the full picture.

Rethink your career. Are you giving it your best? Are you upgrading yourself? As potable water is a very small quantity of the total water on the earth, professional who grow in their careers too may be a small percentage.

And if you like to learn some more science then I think Nehru Science Centre is open on weekends.
