By the beginning of 2027, corporates will need 87.7 million individuals in project management-oriented roles.?

?In this article, we take you on a short journey to have a closer look at the role of the project managers and their key responsibilities.

So, What do project managers actually do?

Generally speaking, the project manager is mainly responsible for minimizing operational costs, maximizing company revenue, and ensuring it is delivered on time, on budget, and within scope.?

Although these responsibilities fluctuate depending on the industry and the type of organization, the project managers share common responsibilities throughout the project life cycle, which consists of five phases, including:

  • Initiation
  • Planning
  • Execution
  • Closure

1. Initiation?

Project managers begin each new project by figuring out the objective of the project, identifying the business needs and sequencing resources. Moreover, they identify internal and external stakeholders and gain the required authorization to proceed with the project.?

More specifically, they are responsible for undertaking the following:?

  • A feasibility study?
  • Identifying scope
  • Identifying initial deliverables
  • Identifying project stakeholders
  • Developing a business case.

2. Planning

After finalizing the first phase, project managers start establishing the plan. During this phase that they will outline critical deliverables, build teams, create smaller goals within bigger projects, and identify the tasks that must be completed within specific time frames. They also oversee scope, cost, timelines, risk, quality issues, and communications.?

The project manager is mainly responsible for identifying the project timeline, the tasks to be performed, and possible constraints,? creating workflow diagrams, estimating the budget, and creating a financial plan to get the maximum return on investment.

3. Execution

Once the business is approved, the plan is developed, and the team is built, it is time to turn the plan into action and track, organize team members, brief them on tasks, and communicate with team members, clients, and upper management:?

The project manager is also responsible for providing updates to project stakeholders, managing timelines, and ensuring the work is done according to the original plan.?

4. Closure

Once the plan is completed, it is now time to enter the closure phase. Here, the project manager provides final deliverables, releases project resources, and determines the project's success. In this phase, it is important? to:

  • Analyze the? project performance: Are the project's goals achieved or not?
  • Analyze team performance: Did the team meet the target??
  • Conduct post-implementation overall review
  • Allocate remaining resources for future projects
