What to Do Next After Generating a Data Journalism Story Idea

After generating a data journalism story idea, the next steps are crucial for developing a compelling narrative. Drawing from my own firsthand experiences accrued over the years, this is how to proceed, particularly in the Zimbabwean context and whether you need a hypothesis or a specific story angle.

Do You Really Need a Hypothesis First? ??

While having a hypothesis can guide your research, it’s not always necessary at the outset. Instead, focus on formulating key questions that your story aims to answer. For example, if your story idea revolves around the impact of inflation on food prices in Zimbabwe, you might ask:

  • How much have food prices increased over the past year?
  • Which provinces are most affected by these price changes?
  • What are the implications for low-income households?

Starting with questions allows for flexibility in your research and can lead to unexpected insights.

Finding Your Story Angle ??

The story angle is essential as it shapes how you present your findings. Consider the following aspects to determine your angle:

  • Relevance - How does your story connect with current events or ongoing issues in Zimbabwe? For instance, linking food price inflation to the broader economic crisis can make your story more impactful.
  • Audience - Who are you writing for? Tailor your angle to resonate with your target audience, whether they are policymakers, the general public, or specific communities.
  • Data Availability - Assess the data you have access to and how it can support your angle. If you find compelling data on provincial disparities in food prices, that could become a focal point of your story.

Questions to Ask Yourself Before Pursuing the Story ??

  1. Is the story newsworthy? Does it address a significant issue affecting the community? For example, the rising cost of living in urban areas like Harare, Bulawayo or Gweru could be a pressing concern.
  2. What is the potential impact? Will your story inform or mobilise action? Investigating how inflation affects food security can drive discussions on government interventions.
  3. Do I have sufficient data? Is the data reliable and comprehensive enough to support your narrative? Ensure that you can back up your claims with solid evidence.
  4. Are there ethical considerations? Consider the implications of your story on the communities involved. Ensure that your reporting is sensitive to the challenges faced by vulnerable populations.
  5. What visuals or data representations can enhance the story? Think about how to present your findings visually. Infographics or interactive maps can help illustrate complex data in an engaging way.

After generating a data journalism story idea, focus on formulating questions, determining your story angle and critically assessing the worthiness of the story. In the Zimbabwean context, addressing pressing issues like economic hardship, food security or climate change can lead to impactful journalism that resonates with your audience. By asking the right questions and being mindful of your approach, you can create compelling narratives that drive change and awareness in your community.
