What do my Grandad's glasses & your business approach have in common?

My Mum reminded me of this incredible (and hilarious) story about my Grandad last month.

?

And it might have something to do with your approach to your business.? You can tell me at the end!?

My Grandad was something of an eccentric inventor.? He had a garage full of odds and ends, valves and contraptions. He'd constantly be inventing ways around day to day tasks.? Sometimes to good effect, but often with hilarious results.?

?

I miss him!

?

And it wasn't just inventions.? His home made wine was legendary... for all the wrong reasons!? I still remember as a kid the screwed up faces the adults would pull when sipping his sour wine!

?

Anyway, back to the glasses!

?

So you know when you go to the opticians and get a new pair of glasses?? They often need adjusting to your face - sometimes being made smaller, sometimes larger.? They have a special machine at the opticians that gently warms up the arms of the glasses enabling the Opticians to mould these better to your face shape.

?

Well my Grandad got some new glasses.? But they kept slipping down his nose when he got them home.

?

Not one to take them back to the opticians, oh no!

?

My Grandad told himself:? "I can adjust them myself. How hard can it be?"

?

Turns out... very hard if you don't have the right equipment and some experienced help.

?

Camera cut to.... my Grandad popping his new glasses into the oven on a baking tray (!).??

?

As you can probably imagine, rather than simply warming the arms of the glasses, he opened the oven door a few minutes later to a melted puddle of plastic and two perfectly preserved lenses on the baking tray.

?

I'd have loved to be a fly on the wall when he explained that to my Nan and the Optician. ??

?

?

So what does this have to do with your business approach?

?

Well if you're anything like me at the start of my entrepreneurship journey (and my Grandad!??) - you'll be trying to do everything on your own without help.

?

I get it! I've been there...

?

There's a mixture of:

?

? Pride (wanting to prove to others, but mainly yourself, that you can make it alone

? Wanting to save an initial outlay of expenses (But potentially putting a ceiling on your income by doing it all alone)

? Not wanting to lose control

?

But the challenge here is that you don't have to do everything alone. And in fact, by doing so you're often putting a cap on what you can achieve.

?

To be able to take in the bigger picture of your business and business strategy, it's important to step away from some of the "doing".

?

To give yourself time and distance to identify:

?

?? Where you've been spending most of your time on (and identify whether you are getting the right ROI for your effort)

?? The gaps and areas you are avoiding (consciously or unconsciously) that impact your business bottom line

?? Where you can approach your operations, sales and foundations in a more strategic

?

?

Are you sick of wading through the treacle of your business and need help to get clarity on the direction of travel that will help you with more impact, growth and revenue?

?

Don't put up with melted glasses and doing it alone.? I'm here in your corner cheering you ??%.
