What To Do In A Motor Accident In Singapore

I recently helped a client who was involved in a motor accident and decided to compile this handy guide for anyone in Singapore to use. Follow these steps should you find yourself in such a situation:

  1. Stop your car and turn on your hazard lights.
  2. Check for injuries. If anyone is injured, call for an ambulance immediately.
  3. Secure the scene. If there are any hazards, such as leaking fluids or downed power lines, take steps to secure the scene to prevent further accidents.
  4. Take photos of the scene. Take photos of the damage to all vehicles involved, the surrounding area, and any skid marks or other evidence.
  5. Exchange information with the other drivers involved. Get the names, contact information, and insurance details of all drivers involved in the accident.
  6. Report the accident. You can report the accident to the police via online means, or you can make a report at an authorised accident reporting center, or vehicle repair workshop within 24 hours.

?

Here are some additional tips:

  • It is highly recommended that you install an in-car video camera and ensure that it is on. It can help a lot in establishing fault.
  • Even if you don’t make a claim, or a private settlement is agreed upon, you should still make a report. By not reporting the accident, your claim may be prejudiced or declined later by insurers.
  • Do not reply to any Originating Claim or Letter of Demand from a third party against you due to the accident. Forward it to your insurer immediately.
  • For smashed windscreens, if your insurance policy covers windscreen damage with an excess, you simply need to go to an authorised workshop to get the windscreen replaced. No report needed.

What about NCD??

  • Do you have an NCD Protector? If so, one ‘at fault’ claim will keep your 50% NCD intact, but a second one within the same year will drop your NCD to 20%.
