THAT ONLY 10% ARE LISTENING. Why? Because the other 90% suspect the presentation will be dull, boring and nothing very surprising or?interesting will happen on the journey. It's all going to be a bit safe.
Thus bang goes your new makeover that's going to push the company forward to greater heights. All lost in the inertia and communication vacuum that is so often the case in virtual presentations.
In the virtual world it is not enough to simply engage your audience. You have to captivate them.
Think about it??- your audience are attending having just finished off a piece of work, their minds are elsewhere, and even before you finish speaking their minds will be moving on to the next meeting or back to the work they were engaged with before you interrupted them with your important leadership speech.?
The evidence suggests the audience are doing all sorts of things other than listen to you. According to an Intercall survey, 47% will visit the toilet during a one hour call, 21% will do some online shopping, 65% will carry on doing some work, while 9% will engage in some exercise. While you are sharing your vision of the future, your audience is busy doing something else.?
So you have to grab their attention.?And here's three ways you can do just that.?
·???????Get them to actively participate in the first five minutes.?The evidence suggests that if you can get your audience to actively participate during these opening minutes then they are far more likely to stay engaged for the rest of your presentation. Active participation could be the audience writing down something they want from your presentation, or a show of hands,??or completing a quick simple poll.?
·???????What's in it for them???The clearer you are on the value the more likely they are to stay engaged throughout your presentation.
·???????Present with passion.?How many times have you watched somebody present virtually where it appears that they've just had a personality transplant and been replaced by a zombie? Don't be a zombie go for human - and the best way to do human is present with passion!
