What Do Men Worry About? (The Truth)
Most men keep their worries to themselves. I know I that do.
Over 50% of men’s worries relate to their appearance.
Of course, being men we don’t talk openly about this.
What do you worry about? Compare yourself to what other guys say (Read More for details).
The #1 thing we struggle with is changing our eating and exercise habits.
Why is this so hard to do?
Science recently discovered a specific protein in your brain that can work for or against you:
What do men worry about on a daily basis?
A recent survey of 1,615 adult men found that 5 of their top 6 worries are related to health and wellness.
A different poll for Today and AOL found that men worry about their appearance more than they worry about their health, jobs or relationships.
Fifty-three per cent of men say they felt unsure about their appearance or weight at least once a week.
The Bad News About Worry
Men who are dissatisfied with their bodies are more likely to report disordered eating, lower quality of life, psychological distress, lower self-esteem and symptoms of depression (study).
The Good News About Worry
Your health is almost 100% under your direct control (genetics matter surprisingly little). You can benefit from simple and consistent changes to your nutrition and fitness:
- You look better
- You get stronger
- You handle stress better
- Your self-esteem increases
- You have more energy and are more productive
The Neuromechanics of Habit Change
Why are bad habits so hard to break?
Why are good habit so hard to maintain?
Scientists at MIT recently discovered the mechanism that causes synapses that fire together to wire and UNWIRE together (also know as neuroplasticity).
A crucial protein called Arc generated by a strengthened synapse causes neighboring synapses to weaken.
You brain hosts a Darwinian struggle between good and bad habits and only the strongest survive.
The Bad News About Bad Habits
When we form bad habits, synapses in that brain region strengthen and Arc weakens adjacent ‘good habit’ synapses.
This explains why positive change can be so hard. Step one is to stop doing stupid shit.
I am living proof of this — you can read about my toxic psychology here.
The Good News About Good Habits
The Arc protein makes the brain ‘plastic’ and far more adaptive than the old ‘fixed mindset’ model.
You can deprogram bad habits and reprogram good habits if you cultivate just 2–3 new habits (here are my top 113 habits and tips to pick from).
This why I specialize in health motivation and am certified in health psychology (you can see my client results here).
