If you read the news you will see some leaders who navigated turbulent waters well. Or you may see those who have been spewing vitriol. You can’t miss those headlines.
I’ve seen my share of great leaders. I have also seen those who failed. That goes in the camp of learn from all mistakes, whether they are yours or someone else you are working with.
So if you are lucky you may see some of these personalities around you.
·?????????The transformation leader who is calm?and poised in the middle of the latest crisis.?No yelling or raised voices.
·?????????The project manager who is calmly communicating with her clients.?They may be strong emotions and reactions during the call but she is focused.
·?????????The finance leader calmly explaining why revenues have been impacted.?A tough message delivered well.
That's what an?emotionally intelligent leader?looks like. A leader who is calm, collected and poised and facing those unknowns.
It all starts with your self-awareness and how you manage the situation you are in.
#1 Be self-aware?– Know your personality. Your weaknesses. Your own strengths. Be aware of emotional hijacks. One manager I knew would press his head when he was worried or uncertain. Our team knew we needed to avoid him during those moments.
#2 Be resilient –?Don’t react wildly. I remember strong emails and even stronger attacks in meetings. There is no need for you to be that person. The one who is getting baited. Remember your body language gives a lot away.?Be that calm person everyone will want around.?Know when it's time to hold back.?

#3 Be open -?Find ways to pay attention. To read the room. Are you saying too much? Listening too little? One leader would suck up all the air in the room. We never got to speak or bring up new ideas.
If your goal is to be that leader people will turn to, remember to learn from the great ones. They exist.
Once you find them, learn from them.
As Lao Tzu said “A leader is best when people barely know he exists, when his work is done, his aim fulfilled, they will say : we did it ourselves”.
