What Do Effective Leaders Do?

Leadership is a dynamic and multifaceted concept that has been a subject of extensive research and analysis in the field of business and management. Effective business organization leadership involves a combination of skills, traits, and actions that contribute to the success and sustainability of an organization. This week, , I explore the essence of effective leadership by drawing from various leadership theories, analysing how these theories manifest in the actions of good leaders and impact organizational outcomes.

?? Transformational Leadership:

Transformational leadership, as conceptualized by James MacGregor Burns, emphasizes the leader's ability to inspire and motivate followers to achieve exceptional outcomes and surpass their own expectations. Transformational leaders are characterised by their vision, charisma, intellectual stimulation, and individualised consideration.

Good leaders, following the principles of transformational leadership, articulate a compelling vision that resonates with the values and aspirations of their team. Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple Inc., is a prime example of a transformational leader. Jobs' visionary thinking and charisma were instrumental in Apple's innovation-driven success. His ability to inspire a sense of purpose and creativity among employees contributed to the development of revolutionary products like the iPhone and iPad.

?? Transactional Leadership:

Transactional leadership, in contrast to transformational leadership, focuses on the exchange between leaders and followers, emphasizing the role of rewards and punishments to motivate performance. Transactional leaders set clear expectations, provide feedback, and use contingent rewards to drive results.

A global example of transactional leadership is exemplified by Jack Welch, the former CEO of General Electric (GE). Welch was known for his rigorous performance management system, where employees were rewarded for meeting specific targets and faced consequences for underperformance. Welch's strategic and disciplined approach to leadership contributed to GE's growth and success during his tenure.

?? Situational Leadership:

Situational leadership, developed by Paul Hersey and Kenneth Blanchard, posits that effective leaders adapt their style based on the readiness or maturity of their followers. The model identifies four leadership styles: telling, selling, participating, and delegating, which leaders employ based on the developmental stage of their team members.

A practical example of situational leadership can be observed in the leadership style of Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon. Bezos is known for his ability to adapt leadership styles based on the context. In the early stages of Amazon, Bezos was heavily involved in decision-making and setting the direction for the company (telling). As Amazon grew, Bezos transitioned to a more participative and delegative style, empowering teams to make decisions and drive innovation.?

?? Charismatic Leadership:?

Charismatic leadership, as proposed by Max Weber, centres around the leader's ability to inspire and influence followers through their personal charm and magnetism. Charismatic leaders often possess a compelling vision and the ability to articulate it in a way that captures the imagination of their followers.

Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, is a contemporary example of a charismatic leader. Musk's dynamic and visionary leadership style, coupled with his ability to articulate a future where sustainable energy and interplanetary colonization are a reality, has garnered a devoted following. Musk's charisma has played a pivotal role in attracting talent, investors, and customers to his ventures.

?? Servant Leadership:

Servant leadership, proposed by Robert K. Greenleaf, emphasises leaders' focus on serving and empowering their followers. Servant leaders prioritise the well-being and development of their team members, fostering a culture of collaboration and empathy.

An example of servant leadership is demonstrated by Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft. Nadella's leadership style is characterized by humility, a focus on inclusivity, and a commitment to empowering employees. Under his leadership, Microsoft has embraced a growth mindset and a culture of continuous learning, emphasising the importance of serving customers and society at large.

?? Authentic Leadership:

Authentic leadership theory emphasises the importance of leaders being genuine, self-aware, and true to their values. Authentic leaders build trust through transparency, open communication, and a commitment to ethical behaviour.

In East Asia, Hiroshi Mikitani, the founder and CEO of Rakuten, exemplifies authentic leadership. Mikitani's leadership style is characterized by his commitment to transparency, innovation, and a strong belief in empowering employees. His emphasis on open #communication and a flat organisational structure reflects the principles of authentic leadership.

?? Adaptive Leadership:

Adaptive leadership, developed by Ronald Heifetz and Marty Linsky, focuses on the leader's ability to adapt to change and navigate complex adaptive challenges. Adaptive leaders mobilize their teams to confront difficult issues and learn from them, fostering organisational resilience.

During the global financial crisis in 2008, Jamie Dimon, the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, demonstrated adaptive leadership. Dimon's strategic decision-making and transparent communication helped JPMorgan Chase weather the financial storm, positioning the bank as a stable and resilient institution in the aftermath of the crisis.

?? Contingency Theory:

Contingency theory suggests that effective leadership depends on the match between the leader's style and the characteristics of the situation. No one leadership style is universally effective, and leaders must adapt their approach based on the context.

In East Asia, Akio Toyoda, the President and CEO of #Toyota, reflects the principles of contingency theory. Toyoda's leadership style is adapted to the unique characteristics of the automotive industry, emphasizing quality, continuous improvement, and innovation. His approach aligns with the specific needs and challenges faced by Toyota in the competitive global market.

In conclusion, effective business organisation leadership is a complex and evolving phenomenon that draws from various leadership theories. Good leaders integrate elements from these theories, adapting their approach based on the organizational context, the needs of their followers, and the challenges they face. By exploring transformational leadership, transactional leadership, situational leadership, charismatic leadership, servant leadership, authentic leadership, adaptive leadership, and contingency theory, we gain a comprehensive understanding of the multifaceted nature of effective leadership.

Successful leaders everywhere embody the principles of these leadership theories, showcasing the diversity of leadership styles and their impact on organisational outcomes. As #organisations continue to navigate the complexities of the business landscape, the ability to draw insights from diverse leadership theories and apply them judiciously will remain a key determinant of leadership effectiveness. In essence, good leaders do not adhere rigidly to a single theory but employ a dynamic and adaptive approach, recognising that leadership is a nuanced and context-dependent art.?
