What do doctors think about AI?

What do doctors think about AI?

It is impossible to say for sure how many companies are currently working on AI solutions for healthcare.?

But it's certainly not a small number.

Consider the hype that still surrounds AI and the fact that the global AI in healthcare market is expected to grow significantly – valued at $20.9 billion in 2024, it is projected to reach $148.4 billion by 2029, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 48.1% over that period.?

Everyone on the technological side of this is excited about the possibilities AI offers and what can be automated with it – AI often appears as a panacea for all healthcare problems.

But what about the other side, i.e. end users - #medical professionals? What do they think about artificial intelligence in their work?

After all, they're the ones who are supposed to use it, so it's a rational step to find out their opinions, right? ??

Overall, it's good

A survey by the American Medical Association Foundation found that 65% of doctors see benefits in using AI in healthcare.?

Specifically, 56% of respondents believe that AI can enhance:

?? care coordination,?

?? patient convenience,?

?? patient safety.

Of course, these evaluations vary by specialty:

For example, when it comes to radiologists, more than 70% of respondents believe that AI has the potential to improve the quality of radiology exams, ensure more accurate interpretations, and increase access to these services.?

In addition, more than 70% expect their professional roles to change significantly within the next decade.

There are similar, positive conclusions from other statistics - though not always - and it is worth keeping this in mind.

Consider the barriers

This study (link) primarily examined the obstacles to physician adoption of artificial intelligence technology, focusing on the implementation of an AI-based decision support system in the emergency department of a major Canadian hospital.

3 important factors were noted:

  1. Accessibility - The AI system was not integrated with the hospital's existing clinical information systems, requiring the manual printing of patients' medical histories. This created additional work for nurses and clerks who were already busy, and often resulted in medical histories not being provided to doctors.
  2. Usability - Some doctors had difficulty understanding patient information reported by the DSS, especially for patients with multiple ailments or pre-existing conditions. Although improvements have been made to the system to address this, adoption rates have not increased significantly.
  3. Perceived usefulness - Some physicians reported encountering errors in medical histories generated by the DSS, leading them to distrust the system and its potential to harm patients. This perception of risk further discouraged the use of the AI tool.

Lessons for you

So if you are developing an AI product for the medical sector, information like the above are very important.

  • At the stage of designing the solution - you know what mistakes others have made, so you really don't need to make them a second time - after all, "[...] the really sharp ones learn from the mistakes of others".
  • At the stage of communicating with end users - You know what objections medical professionals have to this technology and you can take them into account at the stage of developing the marketing communication of this product.

Great job ditching the marketing fluff and focusing on real data. Doctors' opinions on AI in healthcare are crucial, and this sounds like a valuable read for anyone developing AI products in this space.
