What To Do After a Job Interview

What To Do After a Job Interview

By Michael C. Dennis

After an interview, taking detailed notes can help you refine your approach for future opportunities and ensure you don’t miss out on your next great job. Here are the key things you should jot down:

  • The Interview Questions & Your Responses – Write down the questions asked and how you answered them. This will help you refine weak responses and improve for next time.
  • Strengths & Weaknesses in Your Performance – Note what you did well (confident answers, good rapport) and where you stumbled (hesitations, unclear responses)
  • Unexpected or Challenging Questions – If a question caught you off guard, write it down and think about how you could answer it better in the future.
  • Company & Role Insights – Any new details about the job, team, culture, or expectations that weren’t in the job description.
  • Follow-up & Next Steps – Note when they said they’d follow up, any additional materials they requested.
  • Gut Feeling About the Fit – How did you feel about the company? Could you see yourself thriving there, or were there red flags?
  • Any Commitments Made – If they mentioned a timeline for a decision or a second interview, note it so you can follow up.
  • Lessons Learned – What should you do differently in future interviews? More research? Better examples?

Taking these notes will help you improve with each interview, stay on top of follow-ups, and ultimately land a better opportunity.
