What to do after getting LAID OFF ?

My heart goes out for everyone who got laid off.

I may personally not be able to help everyone , but i can share few tips that could help you know your rights and help you get back at your feet.

~LAYOFF - meaning: a temporary or permanent discharge of a worker or workers because of economic conditions or?shortage?of work.

~ Usually anything that is written in your contract and signed by both the parties (you and the company) it is covered by the law.

~A person who gets fired has no rights to unemployment benefits but a person who has been laid off has. So make sure to ask for your performance reports, get a data backup of your important contacts.

See to it that you never tie your professional email ids to any third-party apps that you can not get access to. In case this has already happened, request your HR/or anyone who is a decision-maker there for temporary access.

~Also know that the layoffs can be either temporary or permanent so even if the employer has laid you off right now can always rehire you. so make sure you don't write anything negative about your former employer.`

~There are no laws that prohibit you to work at any competition or any employer post getting laid of /let go off by any employer. So you can always keep applying for jobs.

~Take care of your mental health- talk to as many people as possible. Take time to process what happened with you. Sending resumes over in anxiety or fear may not land you a good job . Times of desperation may make you pick a wrong company and low pay.

Know that jobs are always temporary- you own your career. There are no life long jobs.

~Know that being laid off is not a reflection of your skillset or your poor performance but a reflection of the bad hiring decisions of your former employer and their mismanagement.

~Make a journal where you write down your accomplishments then make a list of things you are great at , use this time to upskill on things as well. Make a list of companies you want to apply for jobs - do networking- connect with people from the same company where you're applying for a job. Make a job application schedule and use the other time for your mental health and other activities.

~ Every job portal works on keywords because eventually, those are Software used as a service by recruiters and talent professionals- so know that you use proper keywords in your resume: for example, if you're doing an accounting job then make sure which software your use. sage/tally/MYOB/Xero?

~ Re-work on your resume and mention what impact you created? what value you added? what are upskilling yourself on currently ? what were your responsibilities in a few lines and how you can add value to the employer that you're applying job to ?

I hope these few tips help everyone who is reading my article. it's a request that you post the " job openings " of your current company in the comment section so that people who lost their jobs can apply.
