The Sender Policy Framework (SPF) and DomainKeys Identified Mail (DKIM) authentication protocols were developed nearly two decades ago. They’ve been effective in protecting email users from spam, phishing, and other email attacks.
To deliver your email reliably to receivers, you need to make sure that you are following best practices when it comes to email authentication. The use of two verification protocols, SPF and DKIM, are designed to ensure that the sender is authorized to send an email for a given domain. However, using two email authentication protocols complicates the already complex email environment. DMARC Record is an Email Authentication protocol standard released by DMARC Working Group. It aims to aggregate the authentication results from two popular email authentication protocols i.e SPF and DKIM. The DMARC Record notifies the ISPs about the email authentication process.
Every time you send an email, it includes a header that gives information about your email to the receiver. This header is what can be used to tell which emails are from real people and which are from automated systems. But, some spammer software doesn't include a valid sender address in this header, making it a red flag to a lot of email receivers.
Many email servers collect a variety of information to help determine whether a message should be delivered to the inbox. After collecting this information, servers take a few seconds to process all of the collected data and arrive at a decision. They use this delay as a chance to deliver the message immediately so that people don't have to wait too long for legitimate mail. Similarly, receiving domains resolve the listed IP addresses and check to see if any are blocked by their spam filters. In about an hour, you will know if your email was delivered or blocked from the sending domain's perspective.
It’s also tough to get feedback about email deliverability. So, deliverability issues can go undiscovered for weeks or months. This makes it even harder to sort legitimate emails from fraudulent emails.
All this makes receiving ISPs and ESPs hesitant to reject unauthenticated emails from senders that have very good reputations. A sender with a good reputation usually has their email authentication locked down.
