What Dimly Lit Movies and Marketing Have in Common

You may have wondered why certain films and TV shows are so dark these days. And we mean dark in the most literal sense.

No, you don’t have to adjust the brightness on your screen. It’s a trend in the film and TV industries. (And there’s a connection here to content marketing, just stick with us.)

Since the 2010s, more directors have been choosing to shoot scenes with realistic lighting. A scene set in a room lit by a single lamp should actually look like a room with a single lamp.?

This trend is a direct departure from the overly-lit, sometimes-artificial lighting style of flicks from the ‘90s and earlier.

And a lot of folks on social media are nonplussed about the whole thing.?

As content marketers, we find this trend especially interesting because it goes against how the mainstream masses prefer to experience their content.

Dark cinematography is a stylistic choice made by the director. It’s not for everyone.

And that’s exactly the point.

Movie directors, just like content marketers, make movies to appeal to a specific audience. That audience is not everyone, and that’s OK.

Because the point of content marketing — and content creation — is to figure out what your audience wants … and make more of that.
