What is a digital twin?
A new international standard is set to create greater consistency of understanding around digital twins.
The term ‘digital twin’ has been widely used (and misused) in recent years. ... Across different industry sectors and across international boundaries, there are differing interpretations of ‘digital twins’. These range from simplistic suggestions that any digital representation (a point cloud, a 3D model) of an object can be a digital twin, to more advanced definitions that combine digital and physical representations and connect them with two-way communications. However, international use of the term may soon become much more consistent.
Dan Rossiter FCIAT - a nima ambassador, vice-president of the Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists (CIAT) and built environment sector lead at BSI (nima’s partner in maintaining the UK BIM Framework) - has written about a new standard for trade magazine PBC Today (see Has ISO answered, “what is a digital twin?”). BS ISO/IEC 30173:2023, 3.1.1 defines a digital twin as:
“Digital representation of a target entity with data connections that enable convergence between the physical and digital states at an appropriate rate of synchronisation.”

7 个月The term 'Digital Twin' is just the 'Last Name'. To make it fully defined, we need the 'First Name', 'Middle Name', and even the address and postal code. :) First Name: ------------ The structure of the digital twin. Whether it is a component, an asset, a system of assets, or a system of systems (i.e. a Process) ''Middle Name(s)'': ------------------ The nature of the application. It may be doing a prediction, verification/monitoring, optimization, control etc. ''Last Name'': -------------- The currently available broadest definition is provided in Defense Acquisition University’s (DAU) glossary. (Link to the publication: https://ieeexplore.ieee.org/stamp/stamp.jsp?tp=&arnumber=9104682). This is 3-4 years old but still valid. ''Address'': ------------- In which scope it is defined as a digital twin. Of course, the above definition covers most of the essential requirements. But still too broad and there may be points that one can have different views.

7 个月Can you possibly amend the last sentence Dan Rossiter FCIAT to “perhaps the next time someone begins to discuss digital twins….ask them to skip the term and simply explain plain language style what they mean and are refering to instead?” ?? Full of friendly, editorial suggestions ??
