In my latest book, Digital-First Leadership: Master Social Media, Build Online Presence, Lead Your Tribe, I clearly explain the key ingredients every leader needs to know today to be effective in the new digital world.
Changes in the way we work and interact professionally call for all leaders, from C-Suite executives to newly minted managers, to be digitally savvy. My new book “DigitalFirst Leadership” consists of seven chapters that guide you on mastering 21st-century communication tools.
Leading A 21st-Century Company Digitally-First
When you use your authentic voice to create a digital presence and develop a platform, you prepare yourself to be a leader in a crisis and proactively seize opportunities.
With social media, you utilize your channels to tell your corporate story and harness your personality and values as a means of championing your organization.
Social media allows you to better connect with your colleagues, lead your employees, engage your customers, and influence a greater sphere of stakeholders and shareholders.
A CEO’s ability to master 21st-century communication tools gives credit to their ability to lead a 21st-century organization.
According to MIT Sloan Management Review’s latest research, digitally savvy executive teams outperformed comparable companies. Revenue growth and valuation exceeded that of 48 percent.
Jean-Pascal Tricoire, chairman and CEO of energy management company Schneider Electric, nails it on the head when he says:
“ . . . The last thing you want in your team is the belief that digital is somebody else’s problem.”
According to the connected leadership survey conducted by a global business advisory firm, by a ratio of two to one, employees prefer to work for CEOs who use social media than those who do not.
Over 50 percent of CEOs haven’t taken the first step to utilize social media tools, let alone master them.
Here's an overview of what I cover in the book:
Chapter 1 - Forget What You Know About Social Media introduces Digital Leadership in a Post-Pandemic World and breaks down the three myths preventing leaders from being successful. Leaders falsely believe they lack the time, it's all self-promotion, and they don't feel they have anything relevant to share.
I debunk these myths and help leaders learn to set them aside.
Chapter 2 - Developing Your Authentic Voice teaches you how to connect with others and build a community around what’s important to us and our organization’s values.
Chapter 3 - Set Yourself Apart and Stand Out from the Crowd incorporates the 3 P’s, Predictability, Persistent, Presence, that help build our audience and lead our community.
Chapter 4 - Learn the Tools covers the complex components of LinkedIn and translating your digital presence to other social media platforms.
Chapter 5 - Tell Powerful Stories shows you how to engage your audience by demonstrating leadership with your unique narrative.
Don't Go It Alone (Chapter 6) and Foster a Digital-First Culture (Chapter 7) encourage you to build and foster a team with a new business culture focused on our vast digital and online capabilities among today’s realities.
This is a wake-up call. The future of 21st-century digital-first leadership is full of opportunity.
As an executive, you are not the exception to building a solid online presence. Your personal brand and social presence hold A LOT more weight––not only for yourself but for your company.
Today, conversations most often take place on social media platforms. You have to embrace social media as a way to build an online audience, develop a tribe, and wield influence.
Your newfound knowledge of 21st-century communication tools and engagement will be recognized by your teams, clients, and customers as an online pioneer and digital-first leader.
