What the different bewteen 100G SWDM4 and100G BIDI SR

With the rapid development of data centers and cloud computing networks, the demand for high-speed and efficient data transmission continues to grow. In this context, 100G SWDM4 (short wavelength division multiplexing technology) and 100G SR BIDI optical modules, as two advanced optical module technologies, have been widely used.

100G SWDM4 optical module

SWDM refers to short wavelength division multiplexing technology. The principle of wavelength division multiplexing is similar to CWDM on single mode. SWDM extends the 850nm used in traditional multimode optical fiber to 850nm-950nm, expanding the transmission wavelength of multimode optical fiber. It multiplexes 4 wavelengths (850nm, 880nm, 910nm and 940nm) onto 1 multi-mode optical fiber for transmission.

100G QSFP28 SWDM4 optical module is designed for 100G Ethernet duplex multi-mode optical fiber links. Adopting hot-swappable QSFP28 package, the 4x25Gb/s laser based on 850mmVCSEL requires only 2 core optical fibers.


100G BIDI SR optical module

The 100G QSFP28 BIDI SR optical module has 2 independent full-duplex optical channels, complies with QSFP28 MSA and RoHS standards, has a maximum power consumption of 4W, an operating temperature of 0°C to 70°C, and can support 100Gb/s. This module integrates four primary data into two optical channels, allowing optical communication over duplex LC multimode fiber. Instead, at the receiving end the module can demultiplex 2 sets of optical input signals and convert them into 4 channels of electrical data.


It is worth noting that both 100G SWDM4 and 100G BIDI SR optical modules can be used with traditional OM3 and OM4 fiber optic cable. When used with OM3 fiber optic cable, the transmission distance can be up to 70 meters. When used with OM4 fiber optic cable, the transmission distance can be up to 70 meters. The maximum transmission distance can be up to 100 meters. When used with OM5 fiber optic cable, the transmission distance can be up to 150 meters, providing users with high-speed and cost-effective cabling solutions.


100G BIDI SR optical modules are suitable for data centers and enterprise networks with existing fiber optic infrastructure, especially scenarios that require high transmission rates. Its main advantage is that it can achieve high-speed transmission on existing infrastructure and in comparison, the cost of 100G SWDM4 modules is more affordable.
