Lyocell and Tencel are both semi-synthetic textiles made from chemically processed wood pulp, belonging to the viscose family. However, Lyocell stands out by avoiding the use of toxic carbon disulfide in its processing, making it more environmentally friendly. It's also noted for its enhanced durability compared to traditional viscose. Tencel, on the other hand, is a trademarked term specifically denoting Lyocell fibers produced by Lenzing AG, an Austrian company renowned for its sustainable practices.
Both Lyocell and Tencel offer remarkable softness, breathability, and moisture-wicking properties, making them highly desirable for a variety of applications including clothing, bedding, and other textiles. They are considered eco-friendly alternatives due to their renewable wood sources and closed-loop production process. This process ensures that solvents used in manufacturing are recycled and reused, minimizing waste and environmental impact. Furthermore, both Lyocell and Tencel require less water and energy in production compared to conventional fabrics like cotton.
