What Difference a Day Makes - Try 912!
Looking at two pictures of myself
One taken when I started my podcast two years ago, and the other taken just two weeks ago
The difference is striking.
Today is September 10th, 2024—World Suicide Prevention Day.
It’s a day that holds a deep significance for me, a day that serves as both a reminder of the darkness I once faced and a celebration of the light I’ve found since then.
Two and half years ago, I was at a point where I wasn’t sure I’d make it.
Today, I’m writing this as someone who’s recorded 46 episodes of my podcast, sharing my journey and listening to the journeys of others.
Looking at two pictures of myself
It’s not just physical, though you can see it in my face; it’s a representation of the emotional and mental progress I’ve made.
I’m living proof that, despite how dark things can seem, it does get better.
Reflecting on the Past: Where I Was
In March 2023, I wrote about the sobering reality of mental health statistics, particularly for men. Globally, men make up 70-80% of all self-harm deaths, and for every death by suicide, there are about 20 attempts made.
Those numbers are hard to swallow, but they make sense to me now because I’ve lived it—I’ve been in that place where it feels like there’s no way out.
I remember one particular night in Manchester, alone on the 10th floor of a block of flats, terrified of what I might do.
I locked the balcony door, took the key downstairs, and posted it through the letterbox to create some physical distance between myself and an irreversible decision.
It wasn’t easy, and it didn’t change things overnight.
But that small act of self-preservation was one of many steps toward recovery.
Where I Am Now: A Better, Brighter Place
It took time, patience, and a lot of inner work, but I’m in a much better place today.
What helped me most wasn’t just surviving that night or the weeks that followed
It was learning to develop tools and skills to manage my mental health.
I found ways to not only cope but to thrive, and I’m grateful for every person who stood by me, listened, or offered support.
The difference between the person I was two years ago and the person I am today is undeniable.
There were days I didn’t believe in a future for myself, but here I am.
If I could tell my younger self anything, it would be this: it gets better.
Life changes, people come into your life, opportunities arise, and with each day, you find a little more strength.
To Anyone Who’s Struggling: You’re Not Alone
If you’re reading this and you’ve been where I was, or if you’re there right now, I want you to know you’re not alone.
The thoughts you’re having don’t define you, and there are people—friends, family, professionals—who want to help you find your way through this.
Sometimes, it might feel like you’re fighting against yourself, but the fight is worth it.
Trust me!
I’m still on my journey, and I know that mental health isn’t a destination but a constant process of growth.
However, I’ve found hope where there once was none, and I believe you can too.
On this World Suicide Prevention Day, let’s break the silence.
Talk to someone, reach out if you need help, and listen if someone comes to you.
These conversations are difficult, but they can be life-saving.
It’s not just about preventing a death—it’s about fostering life, connection, and the possibility of joy, even in the face of hardship.
Look at where you are today, and know that where you are tomorrow can be different. It’s okay to ask for help.
It’s okay to struggle.
And most importantly, it’s okay to keep going.
