What a Difference a Day Makes

What a Difference a Day Makes

Stanley Adams was an American lyricist and songwriter. He wrote the English lyrics for the song "What a Difference a Day Makes”. Adams was the president of the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers between 1953 and 1956, and again from 1959 until 1980.

What a difference a day makes

Twenty-four little hours,

Brought the sun and the flowers

Where there used to be rain.

We all have bad days, filled with challenges, setbacks, frustrations, resentments and fear. No matter what is going in our life, a divorce, a death in the family, a layoff from our job or an argument with a neighbor or friend, things always look different the next morning.

Groucho Marx once said, “Time wounds all heals.”  I love that. In a single clever mnemonic, he gives us the answer. TIME. Time and Tide wash away the pain. No matter what is happening in my life, I make it a point to remind myself that every bad thing that happens is temporary. In every dark cloud, there is a silver lining.

What follows are simple strategies to navigate the rapids of change, that allows me to let the river do the work, and to appreciate the froth and foam of the currents.

  1. Write it out. Keep a journal. Describe the situation in detail and possible solutions. Writing gives us distance and perspective.
  2. Ask myself, “What is GREAT about this?” and “What am I learning from all this?” and “What will I do different next time this happens?”
  3. Talk it over with someone I respect; a Coach, Mentor, Dutch Uncle. Get some objectivity.
  4. Pray.
  5. Meditate.
  6. Go for a walk, run, yoga, swim. Get out of the office or house.
  7. Do something nice for someone else. Get out of myself.

Will these ideas fix everything? Maybe not. But any or all them will change the way we look at things. And when we change the way we look at things, the things we look at change. Action and time will relieve us from our moribund mindset and offer a modicum of hope.

Cause, effect. Reap, sow.

I am fond of Rod Stewart’s version of “What a Difference a Day Makes”. Stanley Adams had it right, “24 little hours…”
