What is the difference between Power BI Desktop and Power BI Online?

Power BI is a powerful business intelligence and data visualization platform developed by Microsoft. It consists of two main components: Power BI Desktop and Power BI Online (also known as Power BI Service). Here are the key differences between these two components:

Power BI Desktop:

  1. Purpose: Power BI Desktop is a Windows application designed for creating, developing, and authoring reports and dashboards. It is primarily used for creating data models, designing visualizations, and building interactive reports.
  2. Installation: You need to download and install Power BI Desktop on your local computer. It is a standalone application that runs locally.
  3. Data Preparation: Power BI Desktop is the tool of choice for data preparation and transformation. You can import data from various sources, perform data cleaning, and create relationships between tables.
  4. Report Authoring: Users can design and customize reports and dashboards within Power BI Desktop. It offers a wide range of visualizations, formatting options, and data modeling capabilities.
  5. Offline Use: Power BI Desktop allows you to work offline. You can create, edit, and save reports without an internet connection. However, sharing and collaboration require the online service.
  6. Publishing: Reports created in Power BI Desktop can be published to Power BI Online for sharing and collaboration with others.

Power BI Online (Power BI Service):

  1. Purpose: Power BI Online, also known as Power BI Service, is a cloud-based platform for sharing, collaborating on, and consuming Power BI reports and dashboards. It is used for sharing insights with colleagues and stakeholders.
  2. Accessibility: Power BI Online is accessible through a web browser, making it platform-independent. Users can access reports from anywhere with an internet connection.
  3. Sharing and Collaboration: Power BI Online is designed for sharing and collaboration. You can share reports and dashboards with specific users or groups, and collaborate on them in real-time.
  4. Interactivity: End-users can interact with reports and dashboards in Power BI Online. They can explore data, filter visuals, and create their own custom views.
  5. Automatic Data Refresh: Power BI Online supports scheduled data refresh, ensuring that reports stay up-to-date with the latest data from connected data sources.
  6. Mobile Access: Power BI Online is optimized for mobile devices, allowing users to access and interact with reports on smartphones and tablets through the Power BI mobile app.
  7. Content Management: Power BI Online provides content management features, including organizing reports into workspaces, setting access permissions, and monitoring usage.
  8. Subscription and Alerts: Users can subscribe to reports and dashboards to receive email notifications when data changes meet specified conditions. This feature enhances data-driven decision-making.

Nice summary, thank you. Are there any functional (not non-functional) capabilities that differ between Power BI Desktop and Online? For example, can one of them show a visualisation that the other can't?
