What did you learn last week?
Let’s talk about blind spots. A blind spot quite simply is something that you can’t see. We all have them. Sometimes it takes experiencing something painful or uncomfortable to recognize them. Or if you’re fortunate, sometimes folks will make you aware of your blind spots. When you become aware either through experience or someone bringing it to your attention, how do you handle it on the go-forward?
This past week, I was informed of just how imperfect I am. When I received the feedback, I readily accepted it. The message was very direct and unforgiving; but even though the delivery wasn’t ideal, I focused on the message and whether it was true. In those few moments, I didn’t get defensive. I acknowledged it, understood the other person’s point of view and walked away from the conversation with a lesson learned. ?So, what did I learn?
I learned that I can’t grow if I’m never made aware of my blind spots. I need folks in my life to call them out and not be afraid to approach me because of my position or authority. So, be thankful when your blind spots become known to you. Only then can you move forward with a better sense of awareness and caution. ?
What about you? Are you comfortable being vulnerable in this way?
