Health experts suggest breakfast is the most important meal of the day. When combined with exercise, breakfast can help increase your metabolism, weight and cholesterol control, and improve your memory and concentration.
Yet, few of us eat breakfast everyday . . .
- 12% of Americans never eat breakfast
- 21% skip the early a.m. shift most of the time
The reason - we have less and less time. Most of the U.S. population has fled to metro areas and the surrounding city suburbs over several decades. Our work days and commutes have become longer, making less time for a traditional sit-down eggs, bacon and wheat toast breakfast with our spouse or kids.
- 43% of us who eat a regular breakfast eat something "on the go".
- 63% grab something from home
The 1970s and 80s saw packaged cereals grow double digits for decades, followed by recent years' of market decline due to sugar, carb and health concerns. However, other cereal snack and on-the-go products continue to thrive with top brands like General Mills Nature Valley and Kellogg's Nutri-Grain breakfast bars. Why? CONVENIENCE.
Healthier whole breakfast foods have gained traction as well. The FDA recently stated last year that eggs no longer cause cholesterol. Greek Yogurt is growing at an alarming rate vs. regular yogurt. And, flavorful bacon is paired with just about everything today -- from breakfast meals to specialty gourmet burgers, to now a Burger King Chocolate Bacon Milkshake! Who would have thought?
So, the next time you are late for work and you do a grab-n-go breakfast trick-or-treat from the pantry, you may want to think twice about what you eat (or don't eat!) and how it affects your mood, mindset and metabolism throughout the day.
Have a great day! And don't forget to eat something for breakfast!
