What is a deep clean and how often do we need it in our facilities?

The term deep cleaning has been banded around during the pandemic, seen by many as a must have requirement on a regular basis which is great in some ways, but not necessarily needed if your facility is maintaining a high quality and thorough clean on a day-to-day basis.

A deep clean is where 4D cleaning comes in. We divide the cleaning of a room or space into the four dimensions highlighted below to ensure that nothing is left. Take one dimension away and the result won’t be truly clean.

What is deep cleaning?

Deep cleaning refers to the process which goes above and beyond a daily clean and ensures that all areas of your establishment are maintained in a safe and hygienic manner.

While daily cleaning will involve vacuuming, mopping, high touch point cleaning and the maintenance of a tidy appearance, a deep clean will tackle the more hidden, but no less important, areas of cleanliness.

A deep clean is generally undertaken at a quiet period on your establishment so that the cleaning team are able to do a really thorough job.

The key stages:

  • Furniture is moved so that the cleaning team can reach neglected areas.
  • Carpets are shampooed and vacuumed
  • Areas missed in daily cleaning are targeted - vent's, cupboard interiors, underneath desks, soft seating, behind radiators etc.
  • Buffing and polishing of wooden flooring
  • Washrooms are deep cleaned and disinfected - focusing on every detail, from locks & hand dryers, to wipe down finish walls, dispensers, under toilet seats and round the back of toilet pans.
  • Kitchen areas are deep cleaned - including fridges, cupboards, microwaves, oven & extractor units.

How often should a deep clean be completed?

The amount of deep cleaning needed will depend on the the environment and the footfall.

For schools and offices, we recommended that deep cleaning should be completed 3-4 times a year, at quiet times.

However, some commercial establishments with a high footfall may require more regular deep cleaning.

Top Tip

Building cleaning audits are the best way to identify the levels of cleanliness you need to be achieving as well as the regularity of a deep clean throughout the facility.
