One of the key challenges for many large and complex organisations is securing the buy in throughout the process of building AND populating the data catalogue. There is a significant investment in time required for enterprise-wide teams and multi year effort to realise return on investment. Many execs are bought into the vision, however want it delivered in just a couple of years, and, in theory the delivery of a data catalogue is straightforward from a technical perspective. The challenge is in delivering a populated catalogue which benefits the whole organisation, as this can be labour intensive and is often not recognised as a top priority in times of scarce resource. It’s also obviously not something a programme team can just “do” from the centre. The distinction between having a data catalogue and data cataloguing is important here. I’m interested in if anyone has overcome this challenge…
