What DAOs and the Future of Work Have In Common

Call it The Great Realization or the Great Resignation, but one thing is for sure: for savvy companies, new workplace policies are here to stay. Whether providing “work-from-anywhere” arrangements or managing a blended workforce due to tightening budgets and shifting labor pools, employers see a business imperative to get flexible -- both in policies for FTEs and for their own extended workforce in order to achieve critical business goals. ?

Recently, crypto publisher CoinDesk spent a week covering the “Future of Work” theme and discussed how new ways could help get things done. One topic stuck out. Their introduction to decentralized autonomous organizations (DAOs) and how the new structure can replace traditional businesses. They argue DAOs are better than conventional companies at orchestrating projects with many insiders and outsiders, such as contractors or freelancers, as it cites the increasing number of nontraditional workers based on the our own State of Independence Report.

While DAOs have had some massive growth of late (from 13K to 1.7M in 2021 alone, per the World Economic Forum) decentralized autonomous structure will absolutely have some growth challenges, including but not limited to the limited legal relationship between token holders (the equity vehicle) and the DAO itself. However, as DAOs gain traction, they draw strong parallels to the world of independent work, wherein individuals work for themselves, on multiple projects, and control their career destiny through a less and less centralized network of project-based interactions.?

We'd posit that the model is worth looking at for business leaders given its potential and inherent flexibility and that those business leaders already trialing a flexible workforce approach with FTEs alongside independent professional talent will be ahead of the game.?
