What is Culture in the Workplace and Why Does It Matter?

Creating a positive and productive workplace culture can be difficult, especially when you're dealing with different personalities and competing interests.

Many companies struggle to foster an environment of respect, engagement, and collaboration among their employees. Without the right strategies in place, it's easy for workplace culture to become toxic or unproductive.

In this article we'll explore what culture in the workplace is and why it matters. We'll also look at practical ways to strengthen your corporate culture through employee engagement programs, training and development, social responsibility, technology usage policies, and recognition programs.

So what exactly is workplace culture???

Workplace culture is the shared values, beliefs and attitudes of an organization's employees. It can be a powerful force in creating a positive environment where people feel safe to express themselves and take risks without fear of repercussions or judgment.?

Workplace culture shapes how employees interact with each other and their customers, as well as how they approach their work. It also affects employee motivation, loyalty, job satisfaction and productivity levels within the organization. As such, it is critical for businesses to create a workplace culture that encourages creativity, collaboration and innovation among its staff members.

Cracking the Culture Code

Daniel Coyle’s book, The Culture Code: The Secrets of Highly Successful Groups, provides an in-depth look into the inner workings of successful teams and organizations. Through research and case studies from a wide range of industries, Coyle outlines three primary qualities that foster effective cultures: connection, competence and purpose.

Connection is about creating trust between team members and building relationships with one another. It includes activities such as encouraging open communication, fostering collaboration, and recognizing each other's individual strengths.?

Competence is about developing skills, knowledge and expertise within the group; it involves setting goals and assessing progress towards those goals.?

Purpose is about having a shared sense of mission or vision that directs all members' actions to work towards a common goal.

In addition, Coyle identifies seven key behaviors that can help create and maintain an effective culture: establishing safety, sharing vulnerability, engaging in productive conflict, giving and accepting feedback, making commitments and keeping them, building relationships, and creating a shared identity.

The Speed of Trust

In Stephen Covey's book The Speed of Trust: The One Thing That Changes Everything, the author explores how trust is the essential ingredient to successful relationships and organizations. He explains that trust is more than just a feeling; it is also an action that can be cultivated through four core behaviors: talk straight, demonstrate respect, create transparency, and right wrongs. These behaviors are key to creating a positive work environment.

Additionally, employers should strive to create an inclusive and supportive atmosphere by encouraging employees to bring their whole selves to work without fear of judgment or discrimination.?

Employers can do this by providing professional development opportunities for all employees, offering flexible work hours and telecommuting options that allow employees to manage their personal lives, and creating an open dialogue with employees. Furthermore, employers should ensure that their processes are fair and transparent, such as through effective performance review systems.

Finally, employers should practice active listening by responding to employee feedback quickly and thoughtfully. This can help enhance communication between employer and employee while increasing the level of trust in the organization.?

So what are some ways that you can increase your connection and trust with your people?? How can you improve competence in your teams and ensure a shared purpose?? Let’s take a look at some programs you can implement in your organization to accomplish all of these and more!

Employee Engagement Programs

Employee engagement programs are an effective way for employers to foster a positive work environment and boost employee morale. These programs can be implemented in many ways, such as providing incentives for employees who go above and beyond their job duties, recognizing outstanding performance with awards or bonuses, promoting workplace collaboration through team-building activities, offering professional development opportunities such as workshops or seminars, and allowing flexible working arrangements that fit the needs of individual employees.?

Additionally, employers should ensure that processes are fair and transparent by implementing effective performance review systems. Finally, active listening is key; responding quickly and thoughtfully to employee feedback helps build trust between employer and employee while creating a productive atmosphere where everyone feels valued. By following these strategies, employers can create an engaging workplace culture that encourages employees to do their best work.

One of the first actions I take when working with a new client is to conduct an employee opinion survey, analyze the results, and then host small interview sessions with employees to better understand the results, by asking for further feedback, examples and suggestions for improvement.??

By asking your people what’s important to them and including them in the process of addressing key issues and action planning, employees feel heard and valued.? Furthermore, you increase buy-in with new actions and goals because employees feel included in the ideas and implementation.? This process will be more likely to have positive results that stick and are supported by all team members.

Invest in People Through Training and Development

Investing in people through training and development is an important step towards fostering a productive and engaged workforce. By providing employees with resources, tools, and opportunities to continue learning, employers can create an environment where individuals feel empowered to do their best work.?

Training programs should be tailored to the specific needs of each individual employee or team, focusing on topics such as communication skills, problem solving, time management, and leadership development. Additionally, organizations should provide access to additional resources such as books or online courses that allow employees to further develop their skill set outside of traditional training sessions.?

Investing in your people will not only help them become more successful in their roles, but will also lead to better overall outcomes for the organization.

Social Responsibility Initiatives

Organizations should also create and implement social responsibility initiatives, which are activities that demonstrate a commitment to making a positive impact on the environment and society.?
