What is CPR? Four Things You Must Know

In choosing network cable for data network, Construction Products Regulation (CPR) is critical to fire safety of buildings. There are numberless cases happened in electrical fire because of cable sparking.

The safety level of the building is a vital factor of life and property.

Thus, fire retardant and lower toxin and low smoke Ethernet cable were developed under concern and the protection from fire in the cable industry in years.

What Is CPR?

CPR stands for the Construction Products Regulation.

  • European legislation affecting products used in fixed installations in buildings and construction.
  • Covers all construction products, including electrical cables, classifying them by their reaction to fire.
  • An assessment on how cables react in the event of fire.
  • CPR ranging from A to F depending on their flame characteristics.
  • Assessed Europe Standard EN 50575.

CPR, construction products regulation, lays down rules for the marketing of construction products in Europe. It used internally in fixed installations with the expectation of fire-resistant integrity cables, fire performance cables.

What is the classification of CPR?

EN 50575 standard specifies the requirements for the fire performance of cables, classified in 7 Euroclasses according to their contribution to fire: Aca, B1ca, B2ca, Cca, Dca, Eca and Fca. Main classification criteria are flame spread and heat release.

classification of CPR

Sub-classifications:

Euroclasses B To D In Terms Of Smoke, Droplet and Acidity

Smoke Density

  • s1 - low levels of smoke density (an LSZH cable)
  • s1a - LSZH over 80% light transmittance
  • s1b - LSZH over 60% light transmittance
  • s2 - Moderate levels of smoke density
  • s3 - Emits dense smoke - non above all

Flaming Droplets

  • d0 - no flaming droplets
  • d1 - low levels of flaming droplets
  • d2 - Flaming droplets - non above all

Acid Gas Emissions

  • a1 - Low levels of acid gas emissions
  • a2 - intermediate levels of acid gas emissions
  • a3 - Acid gases - non above all

Why choose CPR? Why CPR?

In the case of cables, whose standard application is developed in EN 50575. CPR affects only those power cables, telecommunications, data and control, to be incorporated in construction works permanently. The benefits of the cables which will be regulated by the CPR are:

  1. Reaction to fire: contribution of a cable to the spread of it.
  2. Fire resistance: ability of a cable to maintain its performance under fire condition.
  3. Emissions of hazardous substances: Examine the acid gases during a fire.

Where To Apply?

Based on the risk of fire, here we provide some suggestions about how to apply the CPR-compliant cables in proper environment or circumstances. According to the amount of people or closed conditions, classifying the risk of fire level from low to very high. The below chart shows the use of applications by different risk of fire level.
