WHAT IS COST SHARING?

Cost sharing, also known as matching funds or in-kind contributions, is crucial to many grant proposals. Essentially, it involves the applicant organization committing resources, either cash or in-kind, to the proposed project alongside the funding requested from the grant provider. This demonstrates a shared investment in the project's success, fostering collaboration between the grantee and the funder. Cost sharing can take various forms, such as direct monetary contributions, staff time, equipment usage, or donated goods and services. By leveraging additional resources, cost-sharing amplifies the impact of the grant and demonstrates the organization's commitment to the project's goals.

Matching gifts, on the other hand, refers specifically to securing donations from third-party sources that match the funds provided by the grant. For instance, if a grant requires a 1:1 match, the applicant organization must secure an additional dollar from external sources for every dollar the grant provides. This not only expands the financial resources available for the project but also encourages community involvement and support. Matching gifts can be solicited from individual donors, corporations, foundations, or other entities interested in supporting the project's objectives. This collaborative approach not only enhances the project's sustainability but also strengthens relationships with external stakeholders.

In grant proposals, cost-sharing and matching gifts serve multiple purposes beyond merely fulfilling a funding requirement. They demonstrate the organization's capacity to leverage resources effectively, enhance project feasibility, and increase the likelihood of long-term success and sustainability. Moreover, they signal to funders the organization's commitment to the project's goals and its ability to engage diverse stakeholders. By embracing cost-sharing and matching gifts, grant applicants can strengthen their proposals, foster collaboration, and maximize the impact of their projects on the communities they serve.
