What is a Core Habit?

Imagine, in front of you are ten pieces of dominoes. From the front to the back, you arrange them with a small space apart next to each other.
With all the dominoes now neatly arranged in order, you push the first one going backward. It hits the second one. The second piece hits the third one. Etc.
In a few seconds all the dominoes have fallen.
The amazing thing is you only had to apply minimal force on domino #1. All the other dominoes fell as they knock each other down up to the last piece.
We call this the domino effect.
Keystone Habits
If we apply this phenomenon to habits, any habit, also has a domino effect.
This brings to mind the “keystone” habit concept by author Charles Duhigg.
“Habits or small changes that people introduce into their routines that unintentionally carry over into other aspects of their lives. These are chain reactions that help other good habits take hold.” (Power of Habits)
On the surface, these keystone habits seem like any other habit. The difference is that they trigger ripple effects which change or affect our behavior in totally unexpected ways.
It’s like hitting two birds (or more) with one stone.
Getting to the Core
I use the term “core habit” as my personal expression of the insightful concept of a keystone habit.
When I came up with the program on (H.O.P.E.) Habits of Personal Excellence, I wasn’t aware of the keystone habit concept yet. Although I have read portions of Duhigg’s book, I did not get to read the chapter he dedicated on the idea.
Perhaps because at the time, I was busily browsing multiple book sources.
The idea of the keystone habit could have not come in a timelier manner. It further clarified the focus of my work.
My own definition then of a “core habit” is any positive thought, action or behavior consistently applied to create multiplier and cumulative effect to intentionally produce waves of positivity in other aspects of our lives.
Breaking Down the Core
There are a few things I wish to emphasize with a core habit.
Firstly, a “core habit” is based on a positive thought, action, or behavior.
Secondly, it is consistently applied in overlapping areas of our life whether at home, at work, or in our communities. After all, we cannot regard it as a habit until we practice it pervasively and automatically.
Thirdly, there is absolute intention to act positively. As we increase our self-awareness, we will act on a core habit repeatedly knowing it can produce a wave of positivity.
Fourthly, although outside of our control we act with faith that our core habit can propel a positive multiplier and cumulative effect in ourselves and in others.
Core Group
If you are reading this, please consider being a part of my “core group.” Kindly take the time to offer your own thoughts and insights. I am firm believer of the power of synergy (the whole is greater than the sum of its parts).
If you do, your ideas might just resonate with my own. Or you can share something that will shift my perspective for the better.
So what’s your take?

5 年When positive thoughts are converted action ,they needs strong thrust in the beginning . Lots of resistance comes from within ,here is the area where motivation from outside plays active role . Once we achieve consistency the new habits becomes part of life and generates motivation for to follow it and need of motivation From outside becomes needless.. .
