What is the contribution of the Maritime Sector to the French Economy?
From Hamburg to Dunkirk, then calling port of Casabanca, Lagos and Singapore. We can see that all the big cities are nearby the Sea (Except Paris, but it is crossed by La seine). Thus, the Coastal regions, which are less than 80 Km from the Sea, hold two thirds of the world's population. Sea Transport is an essential vehicule of international trade, around 90% of world trade exchange is transported by sea. So what is the contribution of the maritime sector to the French Economy ?
"A ship in harbor is safe, but that is not what ships are built for"
Today, the French Maritime Industry employs around 115 000 persons across all categories of staff, including managers, engineers, technicians, contractors for a turnover of 30 billion Euros, realizing 60 % of its business on the export market. The maritime sectors includes four major components :
- The shipbuilding industry, represented by the " Groupement des Industries de Construction et Activités Navales (GICAN)", which represents 42 000 jobs for a turnover of 9.5 billion Euros.
- The Offshore Oil & Gas industry, represented by EVOLEN, which has 25 000 to 30 000 jobs for a turnover of 15 billion Euros. The French offshore Oil & Gas service and supply sector is the second largest exporter with 18% of the world market for offshore industry according to the french ministry of the Economy and Industry.
- Nautical industries and services, represented by "La Fédération des Industries Nautiques (FIN)", which has 42 000 jobs for a turnover of 4.7 billion Euros.
- Marine Renewable energies, represented by the "Le Syndicat des Energies Renouvelables (SER)", EVOLEN and GICAN, this niche market represents 2 600 jobs for a turnover of 600 millions of Euros.

France is strengthening its position within the increasingly competitive global maritime market by joining the four major components under the same entity to boost innovation, digitalization, training and promote exporting skills and solutions for sustainable development.
