What to consider while remodeling the interior space?
Spaces are delimited by boundaries, walls. Partitions are necessary; they contain or demarcate activities; separate indoors from outdoors, public spaces from private; and shape the routes we take from one area to another. Moving or removing internal walls and partitions may not make your home any bigger, but thus still enhance the sense of space and eliminate wasted or unused space, improve natural light, and simplify both function and circulation.
Designation:
The first and simplest form of internal rearrangement is simply to change the way you allocate different rooms or areas. As the traditional way of living is dramatically changing, while at the same time family is growing, you will find inevitable to change conventional planning.
Circulation:
As you begin to move by habits throughout the house, you will find that some access are not used while others are frequently used. Only from this observation, you can adjust functions to facilitate routine chores.
Open-plan:
Gaining in popularity over the last years, open-plan is the most common spatial change; it consists in taking down internal walls to provide a free flow of spaces. However, some balance is still required between open areas and more enclosed private spaces. Even the most extroverted persons need to retreat once a while. Also, keep in mind that open areas are harder to heat and inevitably noisier.
Partitions:
Creating new partitions has no structural implications; it is more a question of paying attention to siting and access, scale and proportion, and the design of the partition itself. “Habitable” rooms must have at least one window. You may lose space on behalf of circulation.
A partition does not need to be solid wall. Contemporary materials give you a wide choice of space dividers from translucent materials to flexible dividers such as free-standing foldable screens.
Internal rearrangement is not complete if it does not consider natural light and air. To successfully introduce these two factors into the new space, orientation is the key world.
While planning and proceeding in your internal rearrangements, always keep in mind that in some cases you will need, and it is preferable, to have professional assistance, most probably for removing internal structural walls.
