A hot mix asphalt plant (often referred to as an asphalt mixing plant) is a complete set of equipment used for the mass production of hot mix asphalt mixtures, which consists of a number of key components, each of which has its own specific function and which work in coordination to realize the entire production process. Below are the main components of hot mix asphalt plant and how they function and work together:

1. Cold material supply system: It includes several cold material bins and feeders, which are responsible for transporting different sizes of aggregates (e.g. crushed stone, sand, etc.) to the primary belt conveyor according to a preset ratio.

2. Drying Drum: Used for heating and drying the aggregates. There is a lifting plate inside the drum, which enables the aggregate to roll over during the heating process, ensuring uniform heating and removing moisture.

3. Burner: Provides the heat source, usually using pulverized coal or heavy oil as fuel, to provide the necessary heat to the drying drum to achieve the required aggregate temperature.

4. Hot Material Elevator: Elevates the heated aggregate from the drying drum to the screening unit.

5 Vibrating screen: grades the heated aggregate for subsequent accurate dosing.

6. Hot material bin: stores the screened hot aggregate for further processing.

7. Mineral powder supply system: including powder bin and screw conveyor, used to add appropriate amount of mineral powder to the mixing pot.

8. Asphalt supply system: consists of an asphalt tank and a pumping unit for the proportional addition of asphalt binding material.

9. Weighing System: This consists of electronic scales or other types of weighing equipment used to accurately measure the quantities of the various raw materials.

10. Mixing Pot: This is the core of the mixing process, where all the raw materials are mixed well to form the final product, the hot mix asphalt mixture.

11. Finished product silo: This is used for temporary storage of the mixed asphalt until it is loaded onto trucks for transportation.

12. Dedusting system: Usually a bag filter or cyclone dust collector is used to reduce dust emission and protect the environment.


In practice, the hot mix asphalt plant components work closely together: First, the aggregate from the cold bin is fed by a belt feeder at a set ratio into the drying drum, where it is heated to the proper temperature and excess moisture is removed. The heated aggregate is fed through a hot material elevator to a vibrating screen for screening and then stored in the hot bin. At the same time, the mineral powder and bitumen are prepared through their respective supply systems. Upon receipt of the production order, the weighing system accurately weighs the various materials required according to the recipe and feeds them into the mixing pot. Inside the mixing pot, all the ingredients are fully mixed until the required homogeneity is reached, and the resulting hot mix asphalt mixture is then unloaded into the finished product silo, waiting to be loaded by transportation vehicles.
