What Is A Community ?

Out of the bizarre topics I could take .. why would I choose 'community' ? It's because I have always felt it is highly undervalued and misunderstood. And historically, many crucial things in life are intangible and undervalued like dogs, homemakers, emotional support and many more. This article tries to explain where this initiates, what it currently means and future scope

A community is a social unit with commonality such as place, norms, religion, values, customs, or identity. Communities may share a sense of place situated in a given geographical area or in virtual space through communication platforms. An example of community is a group of Buddhists who meet and chant together.

In modern world, a community could be a group of people with a similar vision or motivation. CISO Platform is a community of senior security officers who network, share, learn, collaborate and believe in giving back to the community. This reminds me of 'The Giving Pledge'. The Giving Pledge is a promise by the world's wealthiest individuals and families to dedicate the majority of their wealth to charitable causes. Almost every popular name is on the list Mark Zuckerberg Melinda French Gates Bill Gates Warren Edward Buffett

Most people want to look upto to their billionaire icon and earn like them but probably don't understand the heart behind the person. It is one thing to make money but another to give it all away for a better world. So, from the bottom of our hearts, anyone who belongs to a community and contributes back, an exceptional 'hats off' moment to you.

Benefits Of A Community

  • Feelings of safety
  • Access to job opportunities
  • Access to affordable goods and services
  • Having places to meet people and socialise
  • Social networks and relationships with neighbours
  • Sense of belonging to the community and having influence and control

If you've read Ikigai (Book On The Japanese secret to a long and happy life) , you know 1 of the secrets is being part of a community. A community is a lifeline, it's there for you to never walk alone. You know when in need this is your single point of contact. You know there are 100 others who will send out a helping hand. That's a community. And that is we're proud to be a part of CISO Platform. #ikigai

Do we remember the cool kids group in school ? Probably yes. There's a particular strength in community. United we stand, divided we fall. At the same time, we must remember to be inclusive and sensitive towards another's needs. It is a 2-way thing, like most things in life. With great power comes great responsibility.

The Sense of Community has four components: membership, influence, fulfillment of needs, and emotional connection.

Now, can we appreciate communities a little more? And be grateful for all the communities we are part of. A huge thank you to all of you who are a part of CISOPlatform

Not all communities are underrated. In actuality, most of the communities that claim to be a community are not at all fitting the exact meaning of a community. Many are pseudo, many are just self acclaimed. Dictatorship and zeal to run a community don't go hand in hand. But still there are a few real communities where each member of the community is respected equally. Equal weightage is given every member's ideas and views. No hard rules. No dictatorships by community founders. No dictatorships. No hidden interests. These are the communities that grow and flourish, and get respected across the globe.
