What a Community Has to Teach About Equality

I can't remember how many times I got asked "Why don't you celebrate Women in Data Science?".

My answer is simple: Do we need to? I don't really feel that we are treated any different within the DSPT community. A plastic trophy and a fancy dinner won't change anything.

For a long time within the community diversity and equality has come up to the discussion and for every single time the answer has been the same, we really do it since the beginning. People come to the community on their own merit, no matter if they are men or women, young or old, students or leaders withing their companies. Everyone enters because they can bring something to the community and everyone is heard. And that's what we need.

I entered the community because I am a human being that speaks it's own mind and it's good at it. I am able to write well, express myself and kind of love the risk of speaking about hard subjects like this one. This is why I'm here, because of who I am as a human being, not because of my genes.

So if a community of young people, volunteers, working together yet distributed by several cities can do it, why can′t companies achieve the same?

As for DSPT, let's hope the future is long. All the road we've travelled has been a lot of work, yet a lot of fun as well.

Thank you DSPT for keeping this attitude alive since the beginning. If this is what equality is, let us keep it that way :)
