What IS Communications?

What IS Communications?

I am a professional storyteller.?

This is the answer I started giving people when they ask me what I do. Since the beginning of recorded time, storytelling is the way humans deliver information to one another. Evolving from folktales to present-day digital content development, communications has always been the center of how humans receive and process information. So what is communications?

Defining Communications

Communication is the way we gather, organize and distribute information. The goal is to relay information to a target audience in a way that is effective and inspires them to take action. Combining elements of marketing, advertising, public relations, and journalism, communicators develop strategies to deliver messages that are not just concise and impactful, but appropriate to different audiences.?

The industry is so broad because there are many channels and platforms used to deliver different types of information.? Examples of how communicators deliver these messages are through campaigns, blogs, social media posts, news releases, press releases and so much more. Knowing what to say at the right place and right time is a coveted skill that many communicators are trained to have.

Communications is Everywhere?

There are many important communications roles in every industry. All industries need effective communication strategies to deliver messages that are timely and relevant. Without communication, society cannot function. Healthcare, government, sports, financial, technological, and engineering industries are a few of the many sectors where strategic communicators are needed. Entities need clear communication internally and externally to function properly.?

The communications industry is so broad and serves so many functions, so people oftentimes have difficulty defining it correctly. I still find myself struggling with this due to the industry constantly evolving. I’ve come to the conclusion that society should stop asking strategic communicators “What do you do?” and start asking “What don’t you do?”

Love this. I end up saying I'm in 'Marketing' - but that doesn't really cut it when the conversation turns to complex ecommerce sales funnels. ??Professional storyteller is much better!
