What is Coaching?

Who am I, and why should you give up an hour of your time once a month to see me?

My name’s Jayne Chudley and 9 years ago I co-founded Fluent Coaching Limited with my business partner John Borland.

Prior to meeting John, I had been running my own business as a trainer and had never coached or been coached, so when John and I set up Fluent my head was in a place of “I know I can run a successful business, John is the master coach, so we will make a good team”

I set this mindset for myself because I was skeptical about coaching and it made me feel better to know why I was part of this duo and what I could bring to the party.

Forward wind 9 years, a Diploma in coaching, thousands of coaching hours, an accredited coach, receiving coaching and I am fully converted.

It’s impossible to explain the power of coaching so all I ask is that you give it a go. You have nothing to lose, you might even enjoy it.

What is coaching?

Whole person coaching can be incredibly powerful and effective. It inspires the coachee to take responsibility for their own life, raises confidence and self-esteem, empowers them to create and achieve goals, and enables them to discover more about who they really are and a whole load of other stuff as well.

Coaching is focused on moving forward in life, achieving goals and making life better.

The most effective part of coaching is that we don’t tell you what you should do; we enable you to discover the answers for yourselves (you are the expert on you).

In essence we place the ball firmly in your court. We believe that people are much more likely to do something if they have chosen it, rather than being told to do it. So sometimes coaching takes a while to get to a certain outcome, but when it does it is far more lasting.

Coaching is all about supporting people to move forward, fulfil their potential and make the most of their life. It’s a partnership between us and you that gives you a space to talk that is confidential, non-judgmental, truthful, challenging and caring.

How do we do it?

Coaching is a focused conversation between coach and coachee. So, we sit down at a regular time and place, over an agreed period of time. We sit and talk through whatever the agenda may be.

What topics do we cover?

It depends on the person and their specific needs. It could be confidence building, relationships, finances, health, career, family, etc. Coaching is endless on the topics that it can cover and often because of the complexity of life more than one topic is being covered at any one time.

Is coaching like therapy, counselling or mentoring?

No. Coaching is not like therapy as we are not trying to “fix” people. Coaching is not like counselling because we are not focused on where the person has been in their life; rather we look at where they are going.

Coaching is not like mentoring as we are don’t have the approach that we are the expert and have the answers, we approach it much more as an equal partnership and allow the person to work out their own solutions.

I completely agree, as coaches we do not fix people or give advice - I struggle a bit with that one, though, because as a coach using astrology, people do look to me for 'answers'.... any advice on how to handle that, greatly appreciated!?
