What is Coaching and how does it work?

Who is a Coach?

When you check online?Oxford Learner's Dictionaries?you will come across with several meanings of a "Coach" as a person and as a vehicle:

  1. a person who trains a person or team in sport
  2. a person who gives private lessons to somebody, often to prepare them for an exam
  3. a person who is employed by somebody to give them advice about how to achieve the things they want in their life and work
  4. a comfortable bus for carrying passengers over long distances
  5. a separate section of a train for carrying passengers
  6. a large closed vehicle with four wheels, pulled by horses, used in the past for carrying passengers

We will concentrate on the meaning of a?coach as "vehicle", as coaching is all about a journey and nothing about instruction or teaching.?

Coaching?delivers results in large measure because of the powerful working relationship created, and the means and style of communication used.?

The?coachee?does acquire facts and develops new skills and behaviours, not by being told or taught but by discovering from within, stimulated by coaching.?

Almost 50 years ago?Timothy Gallwey, a Harvard educationalist and tennis expert, was probably the first to demonstrate a simple method of coaching. Gallwey went on to claim that,

?if a coach can help a player to remove or reduce internal obstacles to performance, an unexpected natural ability to learn and to perform will occur without the need for much technical input from the coach.?

The simple?Inner Game Equation?created by Gallwey highlights the objective of modern coaching:?

Performance = potential - interference
?????P = p - i

Both the Inner Game and coaching focus on improving performance (P) by growing potential (p) and by decreasing interference (i).?

Internal obstacles are often more daunting than external ones.?

Coaching?is unlocking people's potential to maximize their own performance.?

What is the difference between Coaching and Mentoring?

Mentoring is not necessarily coaching, because coaching is not dependent on a more experienced person passing down their knowledge - in fact, this undermines the building of self-belief which creates sustained performance. Instead, coaching requires expertise in coaching, not in the subject at hand.?

Good coaching and leading, and good mentoring for that matter, can and should take a coachee beyond the limitations of the coach, leader, or mentor's own knowledge.?

Influence of the work place

And to our luck, slowly and necessarily, "Employee Engagement" has been proven to be linked to performance, and sl all the behaviours underpin engagement - such as collaborating, meaningful goal setting, delegating, and accountability from coaching approach - have found their way into business language...
