What is this Coach thing anyway?

What is this Coach thing anyway?

I have been asked a lot lately “What is this coaching thing anyway?” ??“Isn’t it just for CEOs?”?? Great questions and over the next few weeks we can explore the benefits and approaches to coaching.

?A thought-provoking analogy came up a few weeks ago when someone commented “You are like a personal trainer for my mind…”???

While I had never thought of it like that before I loved the comparison. People routinely use a personal trainer to achieve their physical fitness or health goals or a nutritionist to meet their diet goals.? Why not employee the same approach for our work-life balance and career development??? A career coach focuses on your goals for skill development, creative problem solving, managing choices and values.? They are the objective and dedicated resource that partners with you to create new habits.

As I was exploring the idea I came across a quote on this from Paul Dolan, (author or Happiness by Design) “Just as people have for years been employing personal trainers to help them get fit and lose weight, so too achieving goals can be accelerated by using an advisor or coach to apply similar principles to success in life.”

?Coaching and personal training both aim to help individuals achieve their goals, but they do so in different ways and focus on different aspects of personal development. ?Coaching focuses on overall personal and professional development, including mental and emotional well-being, personal training is specifically geared towards physical health and fitness.

Chris I like the perspective. I would offer an additional support in that coaches help us to trust ourselves. The attention is always given to how we get others to trust us or even how we learn to trust others. The often forgotten third-child is that we need help in learning to trust ourselves and coaching is critical to achieving this.
